Do your thoughts sound like a broken record?
I’m not good enough.
I have no control.
I should’ve known better.
I’ve failed again.
Why can’t I get past these issues?
Sometimes it feels as though you keep playing the same skipping record… and you’re sick of it.
It’s funny because even though our logical or rational minds know these things are not completely true, there is still a driving force that pushes us.
Next thing we know… our actions are showcasing these negative thoughts.
Bad habits and limiting beliefs can be hard to kick.
This happens because certain beliefs and patterns of thoughts or actions become SO engrained in our thinking. This literally means that these core messages are mapped in the neuropathways of our brains.
It’s like a scale that is trying to balance our conscious thoughts with our subconscious beliefs. No matter how many positive beliefs or experiences we have to counter the old messages, our brain keeps operating with the foundation of that negative function that was once developed to protect us.
For example, you grew up thinking you were a bad child. Now, when anything happens – a mistake at work or an argument at home – your brain loops you back to hearing that original message, “you are bad.” No matter what happens or who is to blame, you always think it’s your fault.
These painful memories linger, and you become frustrated with your inability to recover and move on. Frequently, I find that people are not even aware of the subconscious messages or WHAT caused them in the first place.
EMDR is a technique used to resolve these looping thoughts…
When we encounter disturbing and overwhelming events, it is part of our instinct to choose a “fight, flight, or freeze” response to the stressor. Because the brain is preoccupied with protecting us during intense times, it doesn’t properly process the events.
EMDR is short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy. It is an extensively researched and evidence-based form of psychotherapy that is proven effective and endorsed by mental health organizations around the world, including the American Psychiatric Association and World Health Organization.
EMDR is truly remarkable. It not only allows you to process these past events; but, in doing so, it helps you rewire that underlying message.
This is what an EMDR therapy session looks like…
EMDR therapy sessions consist of alternating eye movements, sounds, or taps to help dislodge stuck memories, encouraging the brain to resume its natural healing process.
For example, you’re burnt out, tired, and depleted, yet you can’t say “No.” You’re overcommitted at work and stretched in every area of your life. How can EMDR help with this scenario?
In an EMDR session, we discover your underlying belief that you have to be perfect or that you’re a disappointment. Then we pinpoint the first time you felt this disappointment, define the worst part of feeling you have to be perfect, or the experience affecting you the most.
Once the target is set up, the bilaterals start (i.e., the EMDR device begins alternating back and forth), and your brain literally does all the work from there. It’s now healing that wound naturally – similarly to how the body heals other physical wounds – by rebuilding with fresh pathways based on new beliefs, such as “I am a hard worker, and I don’t have to be perfect.”
And the crazy part of this scenario is… you were so focused on the symptoms that you didn’t even realize the cause was something hidden underneath – and that it can be corrected!
EMDR is helpful for children and adults with a variety of challenges…
… including abuse, trauma, stress-related issues, performance anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, bullying, betrayals, grief and loss, chronic illnesses, accidents, and many more.
It works to replace negative past beliefs with transformed empowering beliefs. By working through the past and present stressors, you’ll develop new skills and attitudes that will naturally create more positive future responses and actions.
EMDR is one of the most efficient therapy methods that can allow you to experience relief on a much quicker timeline.
Are you ready to change your tune?
The results of people connecting the dots through EMDR are unlike anything I’ve ever seen with other treatment methods. It’s such a privilege to watch clients be liberated from those negative, dysfunctional charges that had taken hold of their minds.
Let’s mix a new soundtrack – one with new patterns and beliefs. Our therapists have personally been on the receiving end of EMDR and are truly grateful for the experiences.
