What type of education is required to become a licensed therapist?
Read on for a more detailed answer on what it takes to become a licensed therapist. Becoming a therapist requires that you complete a four-year bachelor’s degree, plus a master’s degree (which usually takes an additional 2 to 3 years). Therapists then have the option of going on to complete a doctoral degree (another 2-3 years).
Once finished with school, a therapist must complete a one-year internship followed by two years of supervised clinical hours. So, if you’re counting that’s anywhere from 9-12 years to become a licensed therapist.
Each state also has its own set of licensing requirements. Arizona, for example, requires that each therapist meet all of the above requirements (except for the optional doctoral degree), as well as pass a background check, and a licensing exam.
Then, once you receive your license, you are required to renew it every 2 years by completing 30 hours of continuing education.
Plus, there are additional trainings and certifications for specialty modalities like EMDR Therapy and The Gottman Method for couples counseling.
