Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

TF-CBT was first developed to treat children who were victims of sexual abuse. This modality has now expanded to meet the needs of children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced all forms of abuse, PTSD, depression, or anxiety.

Drawing from cognitive behavioral techniques, the clinician works to help the client modify distorted thinking or negative reactions/behaviors. This technique may not be the best choice as an initial intervention if the client is exhibiting serious behaviors (like substance abuse or suicidal ideation) and other modalities may be used prior. TF-CBT is a trauma-sensitive approach.
